Lost...Then Found by: Dina C.

                Lost…Then Found
I woke up to the sound of my loud alarm clock and for the first time in my life I was excited to wake up. I got dressed and ran down my long stairs to find Peter’s mom, Peter and Bob waiting for me, they were 20 minutes early.

          “About time!” complained Bob.

“Hey it’s not my fault you guys are early,” I indicated.

“Whatever! Let’s just get going we don’t want to be late” said Peter.

I quickly ate my breakfast of scrambled eggs and toast and set off to Bobs’ car where his mom was waiting for us.

It was a one hour trip to get to the forest and throughout the entire trip Peter was talking about what trees he wanted to see and what birds he wished to encounter. Bob was listening carefully so I assumed he was interested in what Peter was saying, but I thought it was getting a bit boring and I was glad we reached the forest before I started to tune him out.

When I stepped out and took a look at the forest the sight was mesmerising. I imagined fairies flying in circles, dinosaurs stomping around, unicorns walking up to me and trolls signaling me to go into the forest. Before it could get any better I heard a voice and I was yet to realize it was only Bob.

          “Earth to Kassie” he groaned.

“Thanks for that” I said sarcastically.

“Hey, you can thank me later let’s just get going” he replied.

As we walked through the breathtaking forest I saw beautiful brightly coloured birds which of course, were an interest to Peter. When we had walked for at least an hour, we finally reached a long river which had crystal clear water and lily pads sleeping on the surface of it.

“Wow” was all we could say, it was like the beauty of the river had stolen our words.

“Alright this is where we split up,” said Bobs mom “You kids can go and explore but when you see the sun going down you meet us back at this river.”

“We tied this yellow ribbon here so if you get lost you can climb a hill and look for it,” continued Peter’s mom “Use your compass.”

The shade of yellow was an unusual shade; it was the shade of the stripes on a bee, or even the colour of lemon ice cream.

“C’mon guys!” yelled Bob, who was already ahead of us.

As I ran through the colourful forest I noticed an amazing bird stuck in a butterfly net. Peter and Bob have to see this I thought to myself.

“Hey guys come check this out!” I yelled to them.

They rushed over and when Peter took a look at the bird he gasped.

“That’s a red tailed ranger!” he cheered. “I thought I would never see one since they’re only found in Africa!”

“Alright my ear!” howled Bob who was standing two inches away from Peter.

We decided to help the bird, so we removed the net from its wings and watched it as it flew off into the bright blue sky. As we walked deeper and deeper into the forest we started talking about school and how they should make it an hour instead of six.

“I disagree with you guys” said Peter as he munched on his smelly egg salad “If school was only an hour long we wouldn’t learn everything that we usually learn.”

“True but imagine what we could do with all the extra time” I stated.

After that, Peter and Bob debated about how long school should be, I would have joined in but I was too hypnotized by the colours of the flowers, I thought that I knew what kind they were but I realized that I had never seen them before. The smell of pine trees filled the air, and the sound of woodpeckers pecking and the weird noises of the forest triggered my ear drums.

When I decided to look up at the sky I had expected to see the sun right above us, but I realized it was already setting.

“Hey guys” I called to them.

“What do you think Kassie, how long should school be?” growled Bob.

“Who cares we should be getting back” I told them.

“You’re right it’s getting dark” agreed Bob.

“Get your compass out” said Peter in a horrified voice.

Bob looked through his pockets but then I saw a terrified look on his face.

“It’s not with me” he gulped.

“Oh great. Now we’re going to die” started Peter “I’m too young to die!”

“Nobody’s going to die” I told him in a calm voice, even though I was also terrified “We’ll figure something out.”

We took a look around and couldn’t figure a way back I thought we were done for until Bob said something.

“We could climb that tree and look around” he suggested.

“What an idea” said Peter sarcastically.

When I analyzed the idea I realized that it might indeed work.

“Well its worth a try,” I told Peter.

“Fine, but only because I don’t want to die without trying” he breathed.

Once we started climbing I realized it wasn’t as hard as it seemed, so we reached the top in barely a minute. We took a look around and to our luck I saw the river with the yellow flag.

“There it is,” I said heroically.

          “It’s so close!” chuckled Bob.

I realized that we had walked in a big circle this entire time. Once we reached the river it was at the exact time as our parents.

“Did you guys have fun?” asked Bob’s mom.

“Of course we did” I said with a smile.

I walked to the car with Bob and Peter than told them,

“This is a memory I’m not going to forget.”

“Me neither,” they said in a duet.

        THE END.

City Champs!!!

Congratulations to the Taylor Senior Girls' Basketball team for winning the city championships yesterday at Herman High School. After 4 hard-fought quarters, Taylor nipped Eastwood at the buzzer on a last second shot by Haiden E. with 3.9 seconds left on the clock.

Final score, Taylor 25, Eastwood 24.

Chloe G. from 6/7M rebounded and passed the ball to Haiden for the winning shot.

"I jumped for joy and jumped on Haiden when the ball went in," states Chloe, with a huge grin on her face. "I couldn't believe it."

"I was almost out of hope at the end, but that shot went in and I screamed and jumped up and down. I was shocked," states Dina C. from 6/7M.

6/7M Host Taylor's Black History Month Assembly

On Wednesday morning, 6/7M acted as host for Taylor's Black History Month Assemby.

Julie and Moe were excellent and professional MC's. Dina read a statement about Black History Month from Prime Minister Stephan Harper. Mrs. Bacon's class beautifully sang, "We're Different". Rebecca articulately read a brief history of Africville, a historically significant Nova Scotian town with African-Canadian roots. Tariq eloquently read a poem about Africville to complement Rebecca's brief history.

To conclude our assembly, we did an augmented reality presentation using the APP "Aurasma", to present brief Bios on significant African-Canadians, including our very own Mrs. Laforet, who is our school board's first African-Canadian, female administrator.

All in all, 6/7M did a magnificent job preparing for and hosting our assembly. Great job guys!
